If you ask most people to identify their favorite scent, you’ll get a variety of answers. Fresh mown grass, a hot-out-of-the-oven cinnamon roll, or maybe a loved one’s perfume. But if you ask a desert kid, they’ll tell you it’s the smell that only comes after rain. The American deserts have a plant called the creosote plant, which, after being rained on, creates a chemical reaction that manifests in the most delicious, fragrant aroma. Science aside though, there is nothing quite like the sensation of taking a deep breath outside after it rains. It’s almost as if you can sense the earth’s gratitude for that hydration as you mingle your own breath with the constant photosynthetic cycles happening around you.
